11 million fake euros seized in Colombia

According to El Mundo.es and dated 31.08.08....

National Police officers have dismantled, in Bogotá (Colombia), the largest clandestine printing press mainly dedicated to the counterfeiting of euros and US dollars, although they also made the Colombian national currency.

In this operation, the largest amount of counterfeit euros seized to date has also been seized. In total, 11,257,400 counterfeit euros in 500 and 200 bills, made with sophisticated computer supports.

The operation, called "Chévere", was carried out by agents of the SPAIN BANK INVESTIGATION BRIGADE (BIBE), attached to the General Police Judicial Commissariat, together with the Colombian National Police and Europol.

The modus operandi used by the dismantled organization breaks with the usual techniques used so far in Colombia. This time the printing press counterfeited bills of higher face value, mainly of 500 and 200 euros, using laser printing programmed by sophisticated computer supports and taking advantage of the facilities offered by the latest technological advances.

This new modality located in Colombia is the most commonly used in European Union countries, as well as in the United States. All of this has allowed them to achieve high standards in the quality of the prints.

In the operation, the main link of the organization was arrested in Bogotá, who received the orders for the bills to be made by order and was in charge, afterwards, of the distribution.

An operation in which not only the largest amount of counterfeit euros seized to date has been seized, but also the clandestine laboratory plant where all the tasks related to currency counterfeiting were carried out has been found and dismantled.

The printing press had large technological printing means and an important computer support, such as a high-resolution printer, card reader, industrial guillotine and racks for "Screen". Among the intervened elements, the CDs where the images of the counterfeit 200 and 500 euro bills were stored, necessary for their digital printing, have been found.

Finally, it is worth highlighting the professionalism of the counterfeiter who had soundproofed the workshop where the counterfeiting machinery was located.
